Shadows

If I draw a mouse, for example, to give it a sense of life on the paper, I must also draw its shadow. On the other hand, if I use scissors to cut out the silhouette of a mouse from paper, I’ll have its shape in my hand, and instantly, somewhere, its shadow will appear, projected by light… There it is, the mouse! I immediately understand that the mouse has a life because it has a shadow, just like the one I’ve had since I was born.

It almost seems that the newly created mouse, my artwork, is attempting to escape from the sensory bubble, the umwelt, that belongs to me. Shadow puppet theater allows me to open a dialogue with the more anarchic universe of the silhouette, its shadow.

My first dialogue was with the shadow of the Ugly Duckling…
